GARY’S PICNIC ‘06 - the event that nearly didn’t happen

Hurriedly rescheduled because numerous ‘phone calls to Avon Park from Mark Ashman for a date to hold Gary’s Picnic at Avon Park again this year weren’t returned. In desperation Mark had to contact Santa Pod to try & get the event in Santa Pod’s already full 2006 schedule. Santa Pod obliged by finding the NASC the only free Saturday to hold GP. It was the only available date in the Pod’s calendar.

Without the goodwill of Santa Pod & Mark’s determination, there wouldn’t have been a Gary’s Picnic this year. The Sunday was already scheduled as a RWYB in the Pod’s calendar. That’s why the prize giving was held on the Saturday.

The Friday was already booked for testing so entrants to GP had to wait until 6pm Friday to get into the Pod. Armed with Red Stripe beer, a bag of muesli that never got opened all weekend, (it never got opened at Drayton/Billing either), paracetamol, baby wipes & very little else, I was happy to
wait until 6pm to get into the Pod, it was worth it...

Gary’s Picnic?? I loved it...had a ball even though I ended up going in my diesel van. Europe’s No1 Dragstrip did the racers proud. The track was set up for some good racing. NPB’s (‘new personal best’ times) were had by many racers, timing tickets were being waved around, and that’s what dragracing is about. All the racers I spoke to were chuffed with the track & track time.

My 14 sec door slammer, Prozac would have loved going down that strip, it was so good I was tempted to take my van down.

I just love racing & it’s no secret I like to see cars ‘go’; I adore watching, hearing & smelling ‘em doing the oily stuff they were created for. Cars are for ‘going’ not ‘showing’. At GP I saw some beautiful Oily stuff, including gorgeous Mopars racing. Surrey Muscle fielded several cars & pulled good times even though they ran out of Nitro. Richie Webb’s ragtop Beetle blew little old VW lover me away. Andy Frost laid down some unbelievable times in his street legal, Red Victor2. Racers were having a whale of a time with so many runs that the Nitrous ran out for many of ‘em. Wonderful to watch Taz Racing kicking ’ass on the strip.

NSCC (Northern Street Car Challenge) racers were out in force as usual. With not a dummy to chuck between ‘em, they are a maverick bunch of dedicated racers who turn up whatever, wherever. Visit the NSCC website at www.nscc.info

Ace Cafe’s Mark Wilsmore rode up to the Pod on his bike to present the Ace Cafe prize for Best Reaction Time & was truly ‘slappered’ when I grabbed him & gave him a huge hug. Ace Café had a fabulous stall manned by Ace goodies full of Ace goodies & info …

Cracking time…Cracking Saturday night too…having been caught out this season, NASC are already planning for next season’s Gary’s Picnic….
