30th Anniversary - Wheels
Day
Rushmore Arena
Wheels Day for me is the “must
do” show to start the year with, and this year the Surrey
Street Rodders are celebrating their 30th Anniversary.
I left the house at 5.30 a.m. dodging milk floats and Post
Office vans as I made my way to the motorway, an hour later
I had reached passport control and an hour or so later than
that, arrived at Rushmore Arena, greeted by what I first thought
was a fluorescent weapon of mass destruction, but on closer
inspection realised it was Nick Shanley in his works Hi Viz
jacket!! Phew what a relief!
A very welcoming cuppa later and the rest of the crew arrived,
so we all set about setting up.
The variety of vehicles arriving was truly awesome, Rods,
Drag Cars, Yanks, Trucks, Custom Bikes - you name it, it was
all there, and by midday the place was buzzin’.

The customary good weather had brought people out in droves,
John Price was the compere for the day and a couple of good
quality bands played throughout the day, it all went to make
a truly great start to 2004.
Prize giving was mid afternoon, the NASC Pick going to Mark
Grant and his Green and Flamed Model A Sedan, it’s been
around for some time now and is still as fresh as when it
first hit the road, check it out at the next show.
One thing I can’t make out is why people seem to leave
so bloody early! If your havin’ a good time (and everybody
was) you normally don’t want it to end, (well I don’t
anyway) it’s not as though you’ve got work the
next day. (although I did).

The old Brooklands site that was previously host to this
event is now intended for development, so it had to be moved
to Rushmore Arena, near Aldershot, which has been fraught
with complications. The fact that the event went ahead at
all, let alone was a huge success is testament to all the
hard graft from Surrey Street Rodders.
Well done guys, we’re all lookin’
forward to next time.
